The Palestinian leadership decided to resume its drive to join United Nations and international organizations as soon as US-brokered peace talks with Israel expire by spring, a senior Palestinian official said Tuesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the Palestinian side is aware that the current negotiations, which started last July, are unproductive and would not lead to any agreement with Israel.

However, the official noted that the Palestinian leadership would remain engaged in this round of talks until their nine-month tenure ends in April. "Then, we won't be blamed by the US administration that we caused the negotiations to fail," the official added.

The Palestinians also want Israel to release the final group of 104 long-time prisoners. Israel has already released three batches of the prisoners. The Palestinians said that Israel agreed to do so in exchange for freezing bids to join the international organizations, including the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Palestinians are furious at the continuation of Jewish settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the part of the city they see as a future capital.

They are also upset that John Kerry, the US Secretary of State who champions the negotiations, brings ideas and a security plan that adopt Israel's views.

On Monday, the Executive Committee of the PLO decided to prepare plans to bid for the membership of international organizations.
