Changning District People's Court has granted a man's request to divorce his wife for hiding a medical condition that left her infertile, local media reported Sunday.

The plaintiff, Shao Tian, sued his wife for divorce recently after a medical exam determined she was unable to bear children due to a hormone imbalance, according to a report in the Youth Daily.

Under a court mediated agreement, Shao agreed to pay his wife, Zhan Meili, 300,000 yuan ($49,600) in exchange for her share of their apartment.

Zhan was entitled to a 20-percent ownership stake in the apartment in the divorce because her name was on the property deed, said Wang Xiaying, a court press officer.

It was unclear whether Shao sued because he just wanted a divorce or because he wanted a divorce and full ownership of the apartment.

Shao met Zhan through his mother's colleague, the report said.

At the time, he was about 30 years old. He had spent most of his 20s working in Tokyo after he graduated from university. Zhan was about five years younger than him.

Although the couple took to each other immediately, Zhan kept a distance from Shao. She always wore long pants and long-sleeved shirts with high necklines, even when it was hot outside.

They got married about a year after their introduction. Shao bought an apartment and put Zhan's name on the deed, giving her partial ownership of the property.

It wasn't until after they got married that Shao discovered that Zhan had a hormone imbalance that caused thick, black hair to grow all over her body. When she didn't get pregnant in the first two years of marriage, she went to a doctor and found out that the hormone condition had left her unable to have children.

Shao left Shanghai and returned to Japan because he could not stand that his wife had hidden her condition from him.
