Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had expressed his willingness to play a mediator's role in improving relations between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a South Korean parliamentary official now visiting the Persian country said Monday.

Rouhani made such remarks during his meeting with South Korea's National Assembly Speaker Kang Chang-hee, who visited Tehran on Monday, according to an e-mailed statement by Kang's spokesman Bae Sung-rye, who was accompanying Kang.

The Iranian president said that the Persian country can play a mediator's role in resolving difficult inter-Korean problems, stressing that Iran will keep its promises made with the international community to resolve its nuclear program.

In response, Kang said that the DPRK would follow Iran's suit and make progress in resolving its nuclear program.

Kang was the highest-ranking official of South Korea that visited Tehran since the two countries established their diplomatic ties in 1962.

Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to hold reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War, boosting hopes for a dialogue mood between the two Koreas, which are technically at war yet as the civil war ended in armistice, not peace treaty.
