A new shipment of chemical weapons has been shipped outside the country through the port of Lattakia city, the joint mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the UN said Monday.

"Today, a further shipment of chemical weapons materials took place from the Syrian Arab Republic. The chemical materials were verified by joint mission personnel before being loaded in the Lattakia port onto Danish and Norwegian cargo vessels for onward transportation," the mission said in a press release emailed to Xinhua.

The vessels were accompanied by a naval escort provided by China, Denmark, Norway and the Russian Federation.

The UN Security Council Resolution 2118, unanimously adopted on September 27, 2013, decided to rid the war-torn Syria of chemical weapons. Under the resolution, the OPCW is mandated to oversee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.

The OPCW-UN Joint Mission was formally established on Oct. 16 to achieve the timely removal in the safest and most secure manner possible. The deadline for elimination is June 30, 2014.

The chemical materials in Syria were set to be shipped outside the country via its coastal city of Lattakia to be destroyed on a ship in the sea.
