Representatives of the Syrian government and opposition on Wednesday commenced a fifth day of talks amid differences over the proposed role of a transitional government and the future of President Bashar al-Assad.

The two sides were at odds in regard to the order of discussion of issues to be discussed under the framework of Geneva Communique adopted after the first round of Syria talks last year.

Opposition spokesperson Louay al-Safi accused the Syrian government of

focusing on issues of terrorism instead of a transitional governing body.

Al-Safi said the framework of a transitional government was put forward, with details such as the size of the body, its responsibilities and duration being the topic of discussion over the following days.

However, Dr. Bouthina Shaaban, Syrian government's representative and Syrian presidential advisor, insisted that stopping terrorism was their top priority.

"We want to discuss Geneva I item by item, staring from the first item, and they want to jump to the item speaking about the transitional government," said Shaaban.

She said it was vital to stop violence and terrorism "to create a climate in order to launch a political process."

UN Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will meet delegations separately later on Wednesday to continue discussions.
