Seven Afghan soldiers were killed Sunday in a bomb attack in the country's western province of Nimroz, said an official.

"An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated when a convoy of army was passing a main road in Dilaram district at around midday. The Blast killed seven soldiers on the spot and destroyed one army vehicle," the district governor Khodadad told Xinhua.

About six soldiers were wounded in the attack, he noted.

Taliban militants often attack Afghan and NATO-led forces with IEDs.

The Afghan soldiers and police casualties have risen recently as the US and NATO troops switched from combat to support role, namely training, advising and assisting Afghan forces.

Afghan army and police took the full operational lead from foreign troops in June.

The war-torn country is due to take over the leadership of its own security duties from foreign troops by the end of the year.
