Palestinian factions said on Monday a political endeavor is underway in Damascus to have rebel fighters leave a major refugee camp in the Syrian capital.

In a statement carried by the pro-government al-Watan daily, the factions said they have recently secured an agreement from opposition fighters inside Yarmouk Camp to leave the area to facilitate the return of civilians to the battered camp.

According to the newspaper, the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front has already withdrawn from the camp, and the Ibn Taimieh battalion, another radical group, is set to leave within 24 hours.

The withdrawing groups will hand over their positions to armed Palestinian groups, which have been fighting alongside other militant groups, but decided to agree on a reconciliation pact to let civilians back to their homes.

There were reports that the armed Palestinian groups will also turn themselves in to the authorities as part of the deal.

No details are available about the exact content of the new agreement, the latest in a series of unsuccessful attempts to end the suffering of more than 30,000 people trapped inside the camp.

The Palestinian factions, with the help of the Damascus-based Palestinian Red Crescent, have managed to evacuate about 3,000 people from the camp and delivered many batches of aid rations to those remain trapped there.

Syrian government forces have imposed a siege on Yarmouk for months, blocking the entry of food and medical supplies in a bid to drive out the rebels, who stormed the camp earlier last year and have since entrenched there in hopes to use it as a platform for attacks on Damascus.

The authorities accused the rebels, mostly al-Qaida-linked fighters, of using the civilians as human shield and causing them immense suffering.

The Yarmouk camp is a large district in southern Damascus. Among its 1 million residents, 170,000 are Palestinians, most of whom fled to Syria in 1948 following the establishment of the Israeli state.

Reconciliation at Yarmouk is part of the Syrian government's efforts to solve the crisis internally.

The Reconciliation Ministry has been active in many suburbs of Damascus, reaching out for armed rebels who want to reconcile with the government in order to restore their lives following nearly three years of pitch battles and suffocating siege imposed by the regular army.

The government has stated repeatedly that it seeks to make national reconciliation efforts a success. It has already made strides in bringing about security and safety to several areas in the capital and its suburbs, enabling displaced families to return home.
