12 killed in Iraq's violence

A total of 12 people were killed and 22 wounded in violent attacks across Iraq on Wednesday, police said.

In one of the attacks, two roadside bombs went off near an army patrol in Jurf al-Sakhar area, south of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing six soldiers, a police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, a civilian was killed when a mortar round crashed on his house in the same area of Jurf al-Sakhar, the source said.

A Sunni town scattered about 100 km south of Baghdad, Jurf al- Sakhar, dubbed Triangle of Death, is a hotbed of insurgency against the US troops and Iraqi security forces.

Elsewhere, a roadside bomb exploded in the center of the city of Tuz-Khurmato, some 200 km north of Baghdad, killing four people and wounding nine others, a local police source said.

In a separate incident, a civilian was shot dead by gunmen in the city of Shirqat, about 280 km north of Baghdad, while a roadside bomb wounded five government-backed Sahwa paramilitary group members in the city, a local police source said.

Near Baghdad, a car bomb went off in the town of Madain, some 30 km southeast of Baghdad, wounding three civilians, a police source told Xinhua.

In addition, three people were wounded in an explosion of another car bomb in Jaser Diyala district in the southeastern part of Baghdad, the source said.

Furthermore, two people were wounded when a roadside bomb detonated in Doura district in southern Baghdad, the source added.

Iraq is witnessing its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in years.
