The United Nations on Wednesday delivered food for about 1,000 people in one month to community leaders in the besieged rebel-held Syrian city of Homs, said a UN spokesman here.

Humanitarian operation is now underway in Homs, the third largest Syrian city where a UN-brokered, three-day ceasefire agreement was extended for another three days till Wednesday to allow more food in and get trapped civilians out of it.

Some 200 civilians were evacuated from the city Wednesday, according to UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, who cited the report of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs as saying. "Aid workers said that many people were frail and had difficulty walking."

Meanwhile, the UN Refugee Agency is waiting, along with other partners, to receive evacuees at a reception point at the edge of the Old Town of Homs, said the UN spokesman.

"A center in the suburb of Al Waer was designated by Syrian authorities as a destination place for evacuees to shelter should they choose to do so," he said. "So far, only 200 have opted to go there, while the rest have asked to be taken to neighborhoods in Homs where they have ties or might feel more secure."

Some progress was scored last week when the agreement was reached on "humanitarian pause" from between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day to allow people out and get aid into the Old City of Homs, where 2,500 Syrians have been trapped without outside aid for nearly two years.
