The Syrian government on Wednesday vehemently condemned the twin blasts that rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut earlier in the day and killed five people, according to the official SANA news agency.

"The countries that harbor, finance and support terrorism with money and weapons are responsible for the explosions," Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, an al-Qaida linked group, carried out twin bombings that targeted the Iranian cultural mission in Beirut, leaving five people killed and more than 80 others were injured.

Al-Halqi said such terrorist attacks pose a source of instability and concern to Lebanon, Syria and the entire region in general.

The prime minister stressed the need for the UN and the Security Council to shoulder their responsibilities in adopting resolutions to deter the terrorism backers from carrying on their actions.

The Syrian government has for long accused regional and international players of fueling the situation in the region by supporting radical groups to undermine the security and stability of Syria and other regional countries, such as Lebanon and Iraq.

Meanwhile, Syria's Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi stressed that the entire region is subject to "one terrorist scheme" supported by many parties with one goal.

He stressed the need for the presence of a strategy to combat the terrorism in the region with holding responsible the parties that support, finance and harbor the terrorists.
