UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Wednesday condemned the double bombings in Lebanon that caused several casualties, including children amongst the injured.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the government and people of Lebanon, calling for the perpetrators of this crime to be brought to justice.

"The Secretary-General calls on all Lebanese parties to come together in support of their newly formed government and other state institutions, and to sustain national unity as the best safeguard of Lebanon's security and stability in the face of terrorism," the statement said.

He also noted the active efforts of the Lebanese army and security forces in working to detain terrorist suspects and to prevent attacks.

A suicide bomber on Wednesday detonated a booby-trapped car near the Iranian cultural mission of Bir Hassan, the heartland of Lebanon's Shiite movement Hezbollah, in the southern suburbs of Beirut, capital of Lebanon, just moments before another suicide bomber riding a motorcycle set off another bomb in the crowds of people.

At least five people have reportedly been killed and more than 80 others wounded in the twin blasts, for which the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, an al-Qaida linked group, has claimed responsibility.
