Australia's Queensland Health confirmed on Friday that the health of 17 cancer patients in the state's private and public hospitals is under serious risk due to contaminated batch of drugs.
The state health department said it had asked treating clinicians to check on the well-being of the cancer patients who were administered the contaminated drug after receiving a product recall notice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
"The patients involved were receiving Chemotherapy as part of their treatment and as such, were immunocompromised," Queensland Health said in a statement on Friday.
"To date, the affected patients have not suffered any adverse effects but remain under the supervision of their treating clinician."
Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said the affected stocks of the suspect drug had been successfully withdrawn.
"Patient confidentiality prevents me from releasing any identifying details or locations relating to the affected patients, " she said in the statement.
