The Israeli military maintains contact with Syrian rebel groups to coordinate the transfer of casualties to Israel for medical care, the Israeli Walla news site reported Monday.

An officer, who is assigned to the army's Northern Command, told Walla that a representative of the rebels contacted Israeli security officials to coordinate the arrival of the wounded at the interim border, and provided details on their identities and the severity of their injuries, enabling military forces to prepare accordingly.

Around 1,600 wounded Syrians, including civilians and combatants, have been treated in Israel since March, 2013. They were admitted by a military field hospital positioned near the interim border, while others were sent to civilian hospitals in the northern towns of Nahariya and Safed.

"We won't intervene in the fighting in Syria... but we can't ignore the suffering," the officer said.

Besides, the officer said Israel has renewed its deployment and boosted intelligence gathering efforts in the region to prepare for future threats.
