Shanghai police detained a man for stealing dishes and cutlery from his former employer's small restaurant so he could open his own establishment directly across the street.

The owner of the Hongkou district restaurant, surnamed Wang, said he had bought numerous sets of expensive tableware for the Spring Festival holiday.

Seeing the shining new sets, Wang's former employee, surnamed Wu, decided they were just what he needed to open his new restaurant across the road and used them in plain sight.

Police detained Wu a few days after his grand opening.

Some Net users questioned Wu's intelligence. "Is he an idiot? He dared to use the stolen tableware right in front of his boss," said Lucky_gjy.

"He's seen too many spy movies, where the most obvious place to hide is often the safest," YummyYu joked. "But in real life, it's not so safe."

Net user Lengxiang70 commented, "He is not honest, so he has no future."
