Iran's senior lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi said here Wednesday that the military option will not lead to a political solution on Syria, warning against any negative repercussions on the domestic security of the countries supporting the Syrian rebels.
Speaking at a press conference in the Syrian capital Damascus, Boroujerdi, the Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, reiterated his country's support for the Syrian government and people "in the face of terrorism."
"We stress Iran's supportive stance to Syria in its war against terrorism," he said, adding that the Syrian people are the ones who must determine their country's destiny away from any foreign hegemony.
Meanwhile, the top Iranian official said that the situation of the Syrian government "is much better than before," adding that the Syrian army is "strong and enjoys a lot of potentials."
He slammed Western talks about the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying such talks can't be forced on Syrian people, who will decide their destiny through free elections.
Boroujerdi, who flew to Damascus a day earlier, met Wednesday with al-Assad, who stressed during the meeting that cooperation among the regional countries is key to confront extremism and terrorism that have plagued the region.
Iran is regarded as a staunch supporter of the Syrian administration.
