A Palestinian woman was killed by Israeli forces late on Friday near the border fence in the southern Gaza Strip, medical sources said Saturday.

The body of the woman, identified as Amna Qudeh, 58, was evacuated by Palestinian medical teams Saturday morning, according to hospital sources.

Family sources said the woman was mentally disabled and was missed by nightfall.

An Israeli spokeswoman told Xinhua that the border guards fired warning shots in the air when they spotted a person approaching the fence rapidly by midnight.

"The person ignored the shots, so they had to fire at that person," she said.

According to official Palestinian data, 13 Palestinians have been killed and 100 others injured near the fence since Israel and Hamas rulers of Gaza signed an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire agreement in November 2012.

Under the deal, a 300-meter buffer security zone imposed by Israel along the border has become an open space for Palestinians.
