Chinese director dead at 75

Wu Tianming, a famous Chinese film director who was regarded as a crucial judge of talented directors including Zhang Yimou, passed away at noon on Tuesday.

Wu directed many influential movies such as Life (1984), Old Well (1986) and The King of Masks (1995). His works received multiple awards at domestic and international film festivals such as the Golden Rooster Award, the Hundred Flowers Award, as well as the best director award at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

His works all show strong national characteristics, observing life and portraying characters who have a strong sense of patriotism. Both traditional Chinese culture and his meditations on the meaning of life were reflected in his work.

Many stars have posted on social website Sina Weibo mourning the loss of this great director.
