Islamist Hamas movement which rules the Gaza Strip condemned on Tuesday a ruling of an Egyptian court to ban its activities in Egypt.

"This decision is political and targets the Palestinian people and their resistance," Ezzat al-Resheq, a member of Hamas political bureau told the Hamas-run al-Ray news agency.

The Hamas official said the ruling will have grave consequences as it gives Israel green light to attack Gaza and helps enemies of the Palestinians to swoop on the Palestinian cause.

Earlier on Tuesday, an Egyptian court ruled to ban Hamas activities and ordered all movement's offices in the country be confiscated and shut down.

Relations between Hamas and the new military-backed government of Egypt worsened to unprecedented levels after the ouster last July of Islamist Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, a Hamas patron.

One of Morsi's charges is cooperating with Hamas militants and helping them carry out a prison break in Egypt to release him together with a number of Muslim Brotherhood members during the 2011 revolution.

Cairo also accuses Hamas, an offshoot of the Muslim brotherhood group, of aiding Islamist militants targeting the Egyptian army in Sinai Peninsula.

Consequently, Egypt has destroyed hundreds of smuggling tunnels dug under its border with Gaza and closed the Rafah crossing, Gaza 's main door to the outside world.

However, Hamas has always denied such accusations, describing them as sheer lies.

"The ruling is based on lies and fabrications," al-Resheq added. "It utterly harmonizes with the Israeli and American agendas that demonize the Palestinian resistance against the occupation."

The new ruling will definitely further isolate Hamas, which has been under an Israeli blockade since it ruled Gaza in 2007.
