At a meeting in Paris, participants of the International Support Group for Lebanon on Wednesday pledged further support to Lebanon to improve its economy and security as the Syrian crisis looms over Beirut.

In a final communique, the group which includes the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council "stressed the need to continue to provide a strong and coordinated international support to Lebanon to help the country cope with the problems that affect its security and stability."

As Lebanon is hosting more than one million Syrian refugees, the international group pointed to the necessity to accelerate the delivery of promised aid and provide additional assistance as required by the regional situation.

Furthermore, they called on Lebanese authorities to closely coordinate with U.N. agencies in a bid to "meet the basic humanitarian needs of refugees in Lebanon," mainly by improving the country's "ability to manage and assist refugees arriving and implement emergency measures needed to welcome them."

Voicing concerns on the impact of the Syrian civil war on Lebanon's economy, the international group "encouraged the Lebanese government and its partners to quickly implement the roadmap to stabilize the country."

The participants also urged to boost military support to provide the Lebanese army with the necessary tools to face the security challenges.
