The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) called on Friday for "thorough investigation" over the appalling terrorist attack in Kunming, southwest China, which claimed at least 29 lives and left over a hundred others wounded.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay joined the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council in condemning the terrorist attack, which was orchestrated by Xinjiang separatists, as highlighted by Rupert Colville, OHCHR spokesperson, to Xinhua.

"We are deeply shocked by this very brutal attack in a public place which has taken so many innocent lives and wounded many people," said Colville, emphasizing that "our thoughts are very much with the victims, their families and the people of China as they come to terms with this shocking news."

The spokesperson called for a thorough investigation to the attack, and hoped that those responsible would be brought to justice.

"After crimes of this kind, it is important also for the authorities to prevent stereotyping or reprisals against any one minority community in its aftermath," added Colville.

"Terrorists do not stand for any ethnic group or any religion," Nur Bekri, chairman from far west China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, told reporters Thursday while attending China's annual session of the country's top legislature in Beijing, noting that people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang strongly condemn any form of violence and terrorism.
