Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday morning visited a displacement shelter in a suburb of the capital Damascus, checking on the conditions of the displaced people in that shelter, according to the official SANA news agency.

"President Assad is now touring the al-Duair displacement shelter in the countryside of Damascus and is listening to the needs of the displaced people and their living conditions," the report said.

Further details regarding Assad's first visit to a displacement shelter in Syria are still forthcoming.

Recent statistics showed that more than 100,000 people were killed during the country's 3-year-old crisis, 9.3 million are in need, and 2.2 million Syrians are recorded refugees in neighboring Lebanon and Jordan.

The statistics also mentioned that around 2.5 million Syrians live in areas cut off by the conflict and 1.9 million Syrian children are out of schools.
