A Pakistani Taliban intermediary was scheduled to travel to Waziristan tribal region on Thursday for talks with the militants to decide venue and agenda for the proposed direct talks with the government.

A government negotiation team started peace talks with the Taliban intermediaries last month which resulted into a month-long unilateral cease-fire by the Taliban. The government also suspended airstrikes on the Taliban hideouts in Waziristan tribal region.

The government has now formed another high level committee for direct talks with the Taliban that is seen as the phase of making decisions. The committee is comprised of top government officials.

A senior member of the Taliban dialogue committee, Prof. Mohammad Ibrahim, flew into North Waziristan, along with two representatives of the head of the Taliban committee, Maulana Sami- ul-Haq to meet members of the Taliban's political council.

"We will decide venue and agenda for the face-to-face talks between the Taliban and the government's new committee," Ibrahim told reporters in the northwestern city of Peshawar prior to his departure to Waziristan. The government has provided helicopter to the Taliban negotiators to take them to Waziristan.

"We had succeeded in the first phase of the talks and are hopeful that the second phase of direct talks will also be successful," the Taliban intermediary said.

The government formed the second committee for direct talks as decisions will be taken in the next round of negotiations.

As stage is set for the direct talks, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday started consultations with political leaders to reach a consensus about the coming talks.

He met with senior opposition leader Imran Khan on Wednesday and sought his cooperation in the ongoing peace dialogue with the Taliban militants.

Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party rules the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, had been critical of the government's policies. This time, however, he lauded Nawaz Sharif's move to engage the Taliban in talks.

"We are now entering a result-oriented phase of the dialogue and we need more consensus and understanding," Sharif said when he met with Imran Khan, the PM office said.

The prime minister also appealed to the political parties outside the parliament to support his government's peace efforts.
