China wins first title at Junior Figure Skating Worlds

Chinese Yu Xiaoyu/Jin Yang on Thursday evening won the gold medal in junior pairs, the first title at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Sofia.

Yu/Jin, who took the lead after the short program on Wednesday with 62.58 points, went undefeated in the free skating event as well gaining 111.19 points, to gather a total of 173.77 points.

Russian duets Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov and Maria Vigalova/Egor Zakroev took the silver and bronze medals in the total standing with 168.20 points and 152.48 points respectively.

This is the first time for the Chinese pair winning the title of the world junior championships. Yu told Xinhua that she felt very happy for the victory, but also felt a little pity of the element backward outside death spiral.

"Next season we will enter the senior group. It will be a challenge for us, but we will try hard to improve our technical elements during every step of the training," said Jin in an interview with Xinhua.

Earlier on Thursday, Nam Nguyen of Canada got 72.87 points to win the junior men's short program. Jin Boyang of China came second with 71.51, followed by Shoma Uno of Japan with 70.67.

A total of 166 skaters from 44 countries are competing for the four sets of medals in the Championship that will end on Sunday.
