Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will start on Saturday a visit to Washington where he is scheduled to meet on Monday with US President Barack Obama to discuss the stalled peace process with Israel.
Abbas and Obama will thoroughly review the progress in the US- backed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks which will end in April, Abbas' advisor Majdi al-Khaldi told Xinhua.
During his four-day visit, Abbas will also meet with US officials including Secretary of State John Kerry, al-Khaldi added.
The Palestinian official said that Abbas hopes his meetings with Obama will yield positive results that would lead to comprehensive peace with Israel.
Abbas' meeting with the US president comes after Obama's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, an official Palestinian source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that it is expected that Obama and Abbas will deeply discuss the terms of a framework peace plan which the US has been working on.
He added it is more likely that Obama will ask Abbas to extend the ongoing peace talks.
Last week, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) announced that it will not accept to extend the US-mediated peace talks which resumed last July and will end next month.
Since the resumption of the peace negotiations, Kerry has been leading mediation efforts to get the Palestinians and the Israelis to agree on a framework plan for peace.
The US peace plan tackles final status issues including the borders of the future Palestinian state, Palestinian refugees, security and the status of Jerusalem.
