Net boils over TV show's 'tea eggs' crack

A man on a Taiwan-based TV show hatched the latest meme on the Chinese Web after he commented that most mainlanders are too poor to afford tea eggs. Hard-boiled in spices, tea eggs are a savory and cheap Chinese snack.

Most answered with sarcastic jokes and selfies taken while eating tea eggs. Photos include people snacking on eggs while wearing a diamond ring or a mini tea egg poorly photoshopped in a diamond.

According to a Sina Weibo poll, nearly 70 percent of approximately 20,000 respondents joked that tea eggs are only for the super-rich and everyone else can only put them on layaway.

"I finally realized why there is no sequel for the Chinese food documentary A Bite of China. The film crew must have went bankrupt after filming the tea eggs episode," posted Benrizuijia.

"I was shocked when I heard my friend sold his kidney for money," wrote Chulenaxiedoubutong. "He was not selling it for a Lamborghini, but for a tea egg!"

"Two men proposed to me, and I chose the one who gave me four tea eggs over a three-karat diamond ring," posted Buchengcaiderainyday.

Some responded more diplomatically.

"It's quite normal to see misunderstandings between Taiwanese and mainlanders," posted Shipengpeng. "Most of them have never visited the mainland and their impression of us is a century old."
