Suspected militants on Saturday shot and wounded a policeman in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The attack was carried out Saturday evening at Kakpora of Pulwama district, about 23 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"A police constable was today shot and wounded by militants at Kakpora," Tejinder Singh, a senior police official told media.
"The constable has bullet wound in his leg and he was removed to hospital immediately."
The attack created panic in the locality.
Following the attack contingents of police and paramilitary troopers were rushed to the spot to carry out searches to trace the attacker.
So far, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.
Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in the region.
A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight them.
Meanwhile, the Indian army on Saturday said they averted a major tragedy by defusing an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected militants at Bemina locality of Srinagar city.
"This morning at Bemina Chowk, the road opening party found a pressure cooker containing IED. The troops immediately alerted bomb disposal team, which defused the bomb," said a military spokesman. "The timely detection of bomb at this importation location helped saving many lives."
On Friday three militants, two civilians and an Indian army trooper were killed and four others wounded after militants hijacked a vehicle and tried to storm military camp in the region.
