A construction worker died on Saturday in an accident at Sao Paulo's Itaquerao World Cup stadium.

Firefighters said Fabio Hamilton da Cruz, whose age was not immediately disclosed, died after falling 15 meters from a temporary stand being built at the venue.

It is the eighth death reported at Brazil's 12 World Cup stadiums and the third in four months at the Itaquerao.

In a statement, construction firm Fast Engenharia denied negligence, saying strict health and safety requirements were met by all its workers.

The incident comes as Brazil faces increasing pressure to complete its World Cup stadiums.

Three venues remain incomplete despite a December 2013 deadline imposed by football's governing body FIFA.

The Itaquerao will stage the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Croatia on June 12.

In December two workers died at the stadium when a crane collapsed.Officials did not say whether Saturday's accident would cause further delays.
