Lebanese army and security forces started on Tuesday implementing a security plan in the northern port city of Tripoli to restore calm in the city, local media reported.

Lebanese army started deployment in Tripoli to quell the renewal of clashes linked to the crisis in Syria between the Sunni neighborhood of Bab El-Tebbaneh who supports the Syrian rebels, and the Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen who backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

In early morning, the army units set up checkpoints at the city entrance and all along the Syria street dividing the feuding neighborhoods, and two army helicopters flew overhead for surveillance and protection purposes.

The army also began removing barricades and sandbags and carried out raids to detain suspects mainly in the neighborhoods of Qibbeh, Neemani and Jabal Mohsen, reports said.

It added that the military mainly conducted raids in several of the city's neighborhoods and an army unit has raided the residence of the pro-Syrian Arab Democratic Party Secretary-General Rifaat Eid in Jabal Mohsen and confiscated two wireless devices and two surveillance cameras among other items.

The Lebanese cabinet approved on Thursday the security plan and tasked the army "with seizing arms depots in Tripoli and taking all measures to arrest suspects involved in the fighting in the city and northeastern areas bordering Syria."

Lebanon's north and east have seen clashes and attacks between the two rival neighborhoods which have left scores of casualties.
