Cambodian police on Wednesday afternoon raided a villa in the capital's Tuol Kork district and detained 15 South Korean men for the suspicion of involvement in an illegal online football gambling, a crackdown operation leader confirmed.

"We detained them for inquiries on the suspicion of online gambling," Pov Sopha, deputy chief of the Interior Ministry's Intelligence Unit, told Xinhua after the raid. "A number of computers and laptops are seized for a further investigation."

Online gambling is illegal in Cambodia, he said, adding that the suspects are currently being detained at the Intelligence Unit.

"We have not determined specific charges against them because we need our IT experts to further check those confiscated computers and other materials," he said.

In recent years, the Cambodian authorities have arrested many groups of Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesians, Malaysians, South Koreans and Thais for the charges of either telecom scams or online gambling.
