Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff Thursday celebrated the application of justice, as the trial related to a notorious 1992 prison massacre, one of the worst human rights violations in Brazil's history, concluded.

"Twenty-one years after the Carandiru massacre, the trial of the policemen accused of killing 111 prison inmates ended yesterday. The Carandiru trial, with ample defense rights for the accused ... represents a victory over impunity," Rousseff said via Twitter.

The trial, the largest in Brazil's history, lasted a year, ending late Wednesday with 73 military police officers found guilty for the murder of the inmates at the Sao Paulo state prison.

The notorious Carandiru massacre occurred in October 1992 when police stormed the prison to contain a riot, and killed many inmates. Survivors reported that even prisoners who had surrendered were killed.

It is widely regarded as one of Brazil's worst human rights violations.

The 73 officers were sentenced to combined 20,876 years in jail, and they are expected to appeal.
