El Salvadorian president-elect Salvador Sanchez Ceren said here on Sunday he signed with Honduras' President Juan Orlando Hernandez an agreement to achieve a regional strategic alliance.
"We agree to work together to achieve a strategic alliance for development, trade and investment, so we are also inviting the brother country of Nicaragua to join us in this alliance," said Sanchez Ceren at a press conference after he returned from an official visit to Honduras where the agreement was signed on Saturday.
Sanchez Ceren said he and Hernandez are committed to working for the development of a "constructive, fluid and sustained dialogue that will allow us to strengthen the ties that bind us together."
The president also said that the dispute with Honduras over an island located in the Gulf of Fonseca will be peacefully resolved.
Sanchez Ceren will assume power on June 1 for a four-year term.
