India's maiden Mars mission, Mangalyaan, Wednesday crossed the halfway mark enroute to the Red Planet, sources in the state-owned space agency said.

"Mangalyaan crossed the halfway mark at 9.50 a.m. local time. If everything goes well, then it will reach Mars on September 24 this year as scheduled. It has traveled 337.5 million km so far," the sources said.

Mangalyaan was launched by the Indian Space Research Organization on November 5, 2013, from the southern Indian spaceport of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh to scout for signs of life on Mars.

Only the US, Russia and the European Space Agency have successfully sent a spacecraft to Mars. India has to wait till September to see if it's mission can achieve that remarkable feat.
