A woman has been sentenced to one year in prison in Putuo district for assaulting a police officer while she and her friends smashed up a hospital emergency room in a drunken fit, the local court said Wednesday.
The defendant, surnamed Zhou, was charged with obstructing official business for striking the officer at Tongji Hospital on Xincun Road in January, according to a press release from Putuo District People's Court. She was sentenced Tuesday along with two men, surnamed Lu and Yu, who were each sent to prison for a year on provocation charges.
Zhou, Lu and another woman, who was not identified, accompanied Yu in an ambulance to the hospital because he had a slipped disc in his back, the court said. All four had been drinking.
They arrived in the emergency room around 4 am, yelling and screaming.
Around 5 am, Yu was wheeled on a gurney into the orthopedics emergency room, where a doctor told Yu that he needed an X-ray.
However, Yu insisted that he get treated without an X-ray, and he and Lu began arguing with the doctor.
The doctor called in the hospital's security guards, who escorted the four of them into the hallway and told them to calm down. Lu did not calm down. Instead, he began kicking the door to the emergency room. When the door opened, Yu got off of his gurney and followed Lu inside. Zhou, who was Yu's mistress, went with them.
The three assaulted the doctor inside and smashed a computer and printer, the court said.
When responding police officers forced them out of the emergency room, Zhou struck one of them and began screaming abuse, the court said. The officer suffered minor injuries.
The officer had to take Lu and the other woman to the police station first because Yu and Zhou had lied down on the floor and refused to move. They didn't get up until Yu's wife arrived at the hospital.
The three defendants caused about 4,000 yuan ($644) in damage to the hospital.
