Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi Wednesday met with US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on boosting bilateral ties.

During the meeting in the Zhongnanhai Compound in downtown Beijing, Yang said Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama agreed in their meeting on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague last month to continue to forge ahead a new model of major-power relations between China and the United States. Their meeting has set the tone and direction for current and future China-US relations, Yang said.

China is willing to work with the US side to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, enhance communication and exchanges at various levels, expand cooperation and properly manage differences and sensitive issues, so as to promote the development of China-US ties on the right track, he said.

Hagel, who was here on Monday for a four-day visit, told Yang that he had "very good, positive" meetings with Chinese military leaders since his arrival.

Highlighting that the United States and China shared a lot common interests, Hagel said cooperation between the two countries is crucial to the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

The US side is committed to building a new type of major-power relations with China, he said.

Both sides spoke positively of the progress made in the development of relations between the two militaries.

Yang also reaffirmed China's position and concerns on issues of Taiwan, East China Sea and South China Sea.
