An Israeli court on Thursday punished a Palestinian prisoner for smuggling his sperm out of the jail two years ago, a Ramallah-based rights organization unveiled.
The Palestinian Prisoner Club Association said in an emailed statement that the Israeli court punished Abdul Karim Rimawi with 5,000 NIS (about $1,449) fine and depriving him from his family's visit for two months.
Rimawi was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He has already spent 12 years in jail. The statement said the punishment of Rimawi was made for smuggling his sperm two years ago to his wife who gave birth to a baby boy eight months ago.
"The punishment of Rimawi is the first such kind of punishment in the history of courts," said the statement.
Meanwhile, Zeyad Abu Ein, the deputy minister of prisoners' affairs, told Xinhua that the punishment of Rimawi "is completely illegal and inhuman."
"Instead of punishing our prisoners for smuggling their sperms, humiliate them and confiscate their rights for living, Israel should free all the Palestinian prisoners from its jails," said Abu Ein.
Many Palestinian prisoners, who married but deprived from meeting their wives, have managed to smuggle their sperms to their wives for the last two years.
Israel is holding around 5,000 Palestinian prisoners. And the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas vowed to free all the Palestinian prisoners in case a permanent peace deal is reached with Israel.
