China's central province of Henan launched a website www.henantourism.sg on Friday in Singapore in a bid to make use of the new media to promote its tourism.

Apart from the website, the tourism authority of Henan will also make use of social media platforms such as Facebook and WeChat to reach out to the tourists in Southeast Asia, said Kou Wujiang, director general of the Henan Tourism Administration.

Speaking at a ceremony to launch the promotion campaign in Singapore, Kou said that Henan Province, known as the cradle of the Chinese civilization, now has direct flights connecting the provincial capital city of Zhengzhou with places such as Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, as well as China's Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.

"Singapore and Henan Province are important source of tourists for each other, and there has been fairly good cooperation involving the tourist industry players from both sides in recent years," he said.

Tian Xin, director of China National Tourist Office in Singapore, said the theme for China's tourism industry in 2014 is smart tourism, which is aimed to promote the improvement of tourist destinations, services, management and marketing by adapting new technologies and new media.

"With that, we are hoping to bring about a change in China's tourist industry to move closer to being a modern service industry, " he said.

He said that Southeast Asia has been one of the most important source of foreign tourists for China, with over 6 million tourist arrivals in China from Southeast Asia per year as the Southeast Asian economies grew fast.

With a land area of 167,000 square kilometers, Henan is one of the most populated provinces in China. It is also one of the largest producer provinces of grains and a province with the most ancient capital cities.
