A company that manages a multi-level parking lot in Huangpu district has been ordered to pay 5,700 yuan ($917) to a driver whose car was damaged on one of the facility's elevators, the local court said Friday.
The plaintiff, surnamed Wang, sued the company earlier this year, demanding 9,500 yuan to cover the cost of repairing his Buick, according to a press release from Huangpu District People's Court.
Wang parked the car at the lot on Ruijin Road South on January 14 with the help of a parking attendant who guided Wang's car into the space.
The lot is equipped with elevators to lift cars to different levels, so it is critical that every vehicle is parked completely within its parking space.
When Wang parked his car, he left the rear end of the vehicle hanging outside the space. When the elevator lifted the car, the Buick's back end got crushed, the court said.
In his lawsuit, Wang argued that the company should take complete responsibility for the damage because its employee failed to make sure he parked the car correctly.
The company argued that Wang was responsible for the damage because he failed to follow the markings on the space that clearly show drivers how to position their vehicles.
The court ruled that the company bore most of the responsibility for the damage because its employee should've checked whether Wang had parked his car within the space. It ordered the company to cover 60 percent of the repair bill.
