Shopping streets may be past revival

Local authorities in the Huangpu district of Shanghai recently unveiled ambitious plans for the future development of the city's two main shopping streets: Nanjing Road East and Huaihai Road Middle.

Specifically, these plans include the construction of several big name flagship stores - such as the largest Samsung "experience store" in the world - along with new shopping centers with fresh brands. Topping things off, the two streets will also be outfitted with wifi equipment offering free Internet access to all visitors.

Right now, authorities reportedly expect to see results on this plan before the end of the year.

Shanghai's two most famous commercial streets have fallen somewhat out of fashion over recent years thanks to the rise of modern shopping malls and e-commerce. In light of trends in China's rapidly evolving consumer market, it won't be easy for administrators in Shanghai to return its high streets to their former glory.

Authorities clearly mean well, but no one can say for certain whether these efforts will pay off. Despite the intentions of officials, it will be the market that ultimately has the final say over which business models are successful.
