An unemployed and married man in Heilongjiang Province was so desperate to keep his new mistress thinking he was a wealthy bachelor that he filed a false police report claiming he was robbed of his fortune.

The man, surnamed Yang, served a week in detention for providing police with false information after claiming he was robbed of 200,000 yuan  ($32,133) from a small black bag kept hidden in his house while out for the day.

An initial police investigation revealed there was no evidence that a robbery took place; the locks were intact, there was no mess, and the bag appeared too small to carry the amount of cash Yang had claimed.

When pressed for details, Yang panicked and fessed up to the ruse.

Yang explained he had fallen in love with a young woman, surnamed Liu, at a night club last year.

The would-be Casanova wooed her into becoming his mistress with tales that he was single and loaded with cash.

Yang was also fined 500 yuan for filing the false report.
