Young urbanite couple heads for the hills

A young couple that has been homesteading for years in Shandong Province will be the first to admit that life in the mountains is the tops.

Artist Tang Guanhua, 25, and wife Xing Zhen began building their home in the Laoshan Mountains in Qingdao back in 2011.

The prudent pair explains they slowly adapted to their DIY lifestyle and learned to collect rainwater, grow food and make their own clothes.

Though in the mountains, the couple is not lacking in public attention - or an Internet connection - as Tang blogs about his homesteading experience on his website for those yearning to also head for the hills.

The couple claims their ultimate goal is to establish a self-sufficient ecological community around the site. They also plan to publish a book about homesteading.

Some Net users said they are "jealous" and expressed similar desires to leave the city to live a simpler life.

However, others pointed out that the couple is not completely "self-sufficient," as they make short stints back to civilization and use a gas-powered electric generator.

"We are not trying to create a utopia and I don't oppose any lifestyles different from mine ... [but] every move we're taking is a small step forward," said Tang.
