Fighter jets from the Royal Jordanian Air Force destroyed several camouflaged armored vehicles trying to enter the kingdom illegally from Syria, Jordan's armed forces said in a statement.

Several camouflaged vehicles attempted to enter Jordan on Wednesday morning from rough terrain at the borders with neighboring Syria, the army said.

"The army issued several warnings to the vehicles drivers to stop, but they did not respond. Then, fighter jets affiliated to the Royal Jordanian Air Force destroyed the vehicles," the army said, adding that Jordan would not tolerate illegal border crossing.

The Jordan army has repeatedly clashed with suspected militant groups and arms smugglers at its border areas since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011. Earlier in the year, Jordan's border guards open fired at two vehicles and seized three others purportedly carrying weapons and ammunition as they tried to cross into Jordan from Syria, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

However, this is the first time Jordan has struck suspected militants using its air force units, signaling the clashes in the border region may be escalating.
