A man who supposedly married two women during a banquet ceremony in Zhejiang Province may still be breaking the law despite not having changed his marital status, lawyers said.

Employees at the civil affairs bureau in Ningbo discovered the groom, surnamed Shi, was still legally a bachelor after photos of his double wedding held in Xiangshan county on April 13 were posted online.

"It is impossible to register as marrying two women at the same time," said an employee with local civil affairs bureau.

Warning bells sounded after photos of Shi kissing two women dressed in red gowns during what appeared to be a wedding ceremony were posted by Net user Candy5411 in a local online forum.

Despite Shi's single status, Chen Minxin, a lawyer at the Tongji Law Firm in Zhejiang, explained the young man may not be completely divorced from controversy, according to China's Marriage Law.

"Although the man did not register the marriage, he may still be in violation of the law if he is found to be cohabitating with the two women," said Chen.

Local government and police are investigating the case.
