Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday pledged a path with Chinese characteristics to ensure the country's national security, urging efforts to adhere to an "overall national security outlook".

When chairing the first meeting of the central national security commission, Xi, also head of the commission, specified a national security system that covers safety in 11 fields -- politics, territory, military, economy, culture, society, science and technology, information, ecology, nuclear and natural resources.

Some of the definitions, namely nuclear safety and information security, echoed with Xi's insights revealed in his speeches at the third Nuclear Security Summit during his European trip last month and a meeting on China's Internet security and informatization in February.

Observers believe that after Xi's remarks stressing national security to the country's armed police forces and air forces respectively on two separate occasions within one week, Tuesday's meeting signaled a clearer and more specific national security strategy of China.

Moreover, Xi's comments highlighted development, peace and harmony among the major features of the Chinese path.

China's efforts to protect national security will pursue development, reform, stability and safety in the country as well as peace, cooperation, common interests and harmony in the world, he said.

National security must be based on the country's development, and it in return protect the development, Xi said.

The comments have made clear that peace and development, rather than hostility and hegemony, are at the same time the basis and the purpose of China's national security commitment.

During his recent European tour, Xi also noted that China opposes hegemonism and power politics and will never seek hegemony or expansionism.

Bearing this principle in mind, China will be more confident to promote transparency in this regard, as in terms of the intention of China's national security, there is no need to hide.

Last week, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel visited China's only aircraft carrier Liaoning, a fact that demonstrated China's openness.

In addition to its own domestic security and development, China will also pay attention to international cooperation to seek common security, according to Xi.

It may indicate that China is willing to take more of an initiative to serve regional and global security, peace and development, with enhanced capability and efficiency.

However, it should also be stressed that such cooperation can only be conducted on an equal footing with the country's core interests not being undermined.

This, in return, requires a better developed and secure China.

All countries in the world are not following a uniform pattern of national security, and China's approach should also be formulated in accordance with the specific security situation and challenges it faces.

In terms of national security, China will not be a trouble maker in the world, and neither will it back off in face of troubles.

Also, a secure, stable and prosperous China will provide more opportunities of peace and development to the world.
