Vietnam's software industry has secure a place in the top-ten software exporters in the world, according to the Vietnam Software Association (VINASA).

In the first quarter of 2014, many local software companies signed export contracts for the whole year, and their total annual revenue is expected to increase between 20 to 25 percent against the previous year.

Tran Phuc Hong, managing director of TMA Solutions, forecast the software outsourcing market would maintain a stable growth towards the year-end as most of the contracts had been secured in the year to date, state-run Radio Voice of Vietnam reported Thursday.

Similarly, Global CyberSoft won many outsourcing contracts from the Japanese and North American markets in the first three months of this year and this helped the company register a strong growth of some 25 percent.

Chu Tien Dung, Chairman of the HCM City Computer Association and Chairman of Quang Trung Software City Development Company, said the major markets for local software outsourcing firms in the period included Japan, North America and Europe.

During January-March, enterprises at Quang Trung Software Park posted a year-on-year revenue increase of 34 percent to 678.1 billion VND (32.1 million US dollars), with exports up 37.4 percent to 16.82 million US dollars. These firms outsourced software products for 20 markets, including the United States, Japan and Europe.

Statistics from the FPT Software revealed that FPT Software's Japanese exports have grown by an annual 27.5 percent over the past three years. A 40-percent rise in 2013 inspired a 200 million USD earning target in 2017.

The mobile and cloud trends in US technology could be especially lucrative for Vietnamese businesses.

The company's US market turnover increased by 65 percent annually in the 2010 to 2012 period and by 70 percent in 2013, and such high growth is forecast to sustain, eventually earning 200 million US dollars from the US market by 2016.

FPT Software is Vietnam's first of its kind to earn 100 million US dollars from exports to 11 countries and territories worldwide. It employs 5,000 staff.

Although holding great potential for development, domestic software companies are facing challenges.

Insiders said the current demand for new technologies, including cloud computing, mobility and big data, is forecast to surge and is opening many opportunities for enterprises to increase earnings. However, Vietnamese enterprises are encountering a lack of programmers.

According to HCM City Computer Association, local software companies were thirsting for employees as the number of outsourcing orders had kept growing since last year.

Statistics from the association showed enterprises in HCM City needed around 80,000 information technology employees while schools can meet only 20 percent of the demand. Moreover, the quality of new graduates has yet to meet the requirements of employers with only ten of every 100 engineers having necessary skills.
