Jose Mario Vaz, the candidate for the African Independence Party for Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), will battle it out with Nuno Gomes Nabiam, an independent candidate, in Guinea Bissau's second round of presidential elections.

Provisional results published on Wednesday by the National Electoral Commission showed that Vaz got 252,269 votes (40.98 percent) against Nabiam who got 154,784 votes (25.14 percent).

The second round is expected to be held on May 18.

Vaz, 57, was a former finance minister of the government that was overthrown through a coup on April 12, 2012.

Nabiam, supported by the late president Kumba Yala, was initially a member of the Social Renewal Party (PRS), the second biggest party in the country.

In Parliament, PAIGC won 55 seats out of 102 opened for contest, followed by PRS with 41 seats, Party for Democratic Convergence with 2 seats, Union for Change with 1 seat and New Democracy Party with 1 seat.

Results from the country's diaspora citizens who are expected to elect two members of parliament will be known within 48 hours, a source from the electoral commission said.
