British Scotland Office Minister David Mundell said in London Thursday that Scotland is doing well economically as part of Britain, hinting that British economic policies for Scotland are working.

Optimism among Scottish businesses continues to grow, with the economic recovery in Scotland becoming more embedded, Mundell said in a statement published by the British Scotland Office.

"Key performance measures have reached levels not seen since 2007 which is leading to more and more Scottish businesses looking to recruit new staff," he added, citing figures from a survey released Thursday by the Scottish Chambers of Commerce.

The manufacturing sector continues to show "robust growth" with investment at its highest level in six years and export orders increasing for five consecutive quarters, the minister noted.

"As part of the UK, Scotland is doing well," he stressed.

The minister said that the Budget has set out the next stage of long-term economic plan, making it easier for Scottish businesses to invest, to take on new staff and excel on a global stage.

With only five months to go before the Scottish independence referendum on Sept. 18 this year, London and Edinburgh have been wrangling on all fronts to win supporters for their respective agendas over Scotland's future.

The Scottish government and its ruling Scottish National Party are campaigning for Scotland's independence which they say can create a "more democratic, more prosperous and fairer" society for Scotland.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond signed the Edinburgh Agreement in October 2012, allowing Scotland to hold the independence referendum this year.
