A police officer and a conscript were shot dead after unknown militants opened fire on their patrol vehicle on the road between Cairo and Suez, Egypt's interior ministry announced in a statement on Sunday.

The accident came two days after a bomb exploded in Cairo's Lebanon Square on Friday night, killing an officer and wounding another.

The Egyptian militant group, Ajnad Misr, claimed responsibility on Saturday for the blast.

Ajnad Misr, or Soldiers of Egypt, formally announced in January that it would target "criminal elements" in the military-backed government in retaliation for their crackdown on supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

Attacks targeting security forces and their installations have escalated across Egypt after the ouster of Islamist leader last July, killing more than 500 people, mostly policemen and soldiers, especially in the restive northern Sinai Peninsula.

But recently, militant assaults have been creeping into the capital and other Nile Delta cities.
