As many as 14 Algerian army troops were killed in a clash with a terrorist group in the province of Tizi Ouzou, 120 km east of Algiers, local media reported on Sunday.

Citing a security source, TSA news website said the soldiers were killed Saturday night during violent clash between army forces and a large terrorist group. The source added that the clash took place in the upper region of Tizi Ouzou between the localities of Iboudrarene and Ouacif.

The source pointed out that a fire clash erupted at around 10 pm when the army troops were concluding a sweeping operation in the region.

The clash lasted for a couple of hours, while more than 15 ambulances rushed to the area to evacuate the victims, local witnesses told TSA.

No official statement has been issued by the Defense Ministry on the attack.

A few militants affiliated to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb ( AQIM) are still taking refuge in the woods of central provinces of Boumerdes, Tizi Ouzou and Bouira.
