At least 23 people were killed and 99 others injured in different incidents for the past five days since the Philippine disaster agency has undergone red alert for the Lenten break, a senior government official said Sunday.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Eduardo del Rosario said that among the incidents that were monitored since April 16, a day before the Lenten break, include 16 vehicular accidents, 10 drowning and six fire incidents.

Twelve people were killed in separate road mishaps, nine in drowning incidents, and one each in fire and shooting incidents, he said.

The 99 injured were due to vehicular accidents, while 11 others were hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning in Catbalogan City in central Philippine province of Samar, the official added.

The NDRRMC Operations Center raised red alert status from April 16 to 21 with representatives from member agencies rendering prompt coordination, monitoring, and reporting as millions of people flocked to provinces to spend their Lenten break.
