Zheng Yanliang, a farmer from Baoding, Hebei Province who had sawed off his gangrenous leg, was outfitted with artificial legs in a Beijing rehabilitation agency on April 18, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Zheng, who amputated his own leg in April of 2012 because he lacked access to affordable medical treatment, had gained nationwide attention after media reports of his plight. He received approximately 360,000 yuan ($57,744) in donations; after spending most of it on medical care and life expenses, he still has 136,000 yuan.

After being fitted with the new legs, Zheng managed to stand for five minutes. With practice, he may be able to walk again in as soon as two months, according to the center's medical staff.
